It’s been a busy week for tech meetups here in Dubai. Last night I went along to the first MongoDB meetup in Dubai, arranged by Rui Leite, and kicked off by Norberto Leite and Bill Brooks, both of MongoDB.

Norberto gave a great introduction into some of the spatial queries, drawing on some OpenStreetMap data to query how many pubs were within a certain radius of a point and talked of the benefits and challenges around using MongoDB with Hadoop and the trade off between real-time and the size of the data set.

Tomorrow brings a developer conference, with technical talks and workshops for various database technologies. There will be more sessions from the MongoDB team as well the team from Nabbesh, a disruptive skills marketplace startup here in Dubai.

It great to see more tech events popping up – the scene is growing.
